Wheat Production, Types, Export and Price in India

Wheat is one of the main food grain in India. Since wheat is rich in protein, carbohydrates and vitamins, it is becoming staple food for millions of people across the world. Because of continuous research and practice, the productivity of wheat have increased multitudes from 663 kg/hectare in 1947 to 3464 kg/hectare in 2021. Wheat is commonly cultivated in the northern part of India as shown in the map including the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan etc. Wheat is a major Rabi Crop in India, which is sown in November once the monsoon is over and cultivated in April/May.


Types of Wheat


The main varieties of wheat grown in India are as follows VL-832,VL-804, HS-365, HS-240 , HD2687,WH-147, WH-542, PBW-343, WH-896(d), PDW-233(d), UP-2338, PBW-502, Shresth (HD 2687), Aditya (HD 2781), HW-2044, HW-1085, NP-200(di), HW-741.


Difference between Hard and soft wheat?

Hard Wheat: Durum Wheat (Triticum durum) it has high gluten and protein content than soft wheat. It is used for Pasta. The high gluten content in the hard wheat provides good elasticity to the dough and absorbs more water. This will be available mostly from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and some parts of Punjab and Rajasthan. hard wheat is mostly the summer crop.


Soft Wheat: Common wheat (Triticum aestivum) is most commonly grown wheat, which has less protein content than the hard wheat and often used to make bread, cake, cookies etc. This variety is commonly grown in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam, etc.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that the World Wheat Production 2021/2022 will be 778.52 million metric tons. India is second largest producer of Wheat and next to China.
